PORTRAIT OF A BLACK WOMAN

I resketched my face on the palms of God

For I am a black woman who

bears the colours of heaven’s art

Thus; each day the sun romances me,

With kisses on my watery lips_ (a ritual my mother calls sinful)

I morphed myself into everything that ever painted

the fingers of God.

Say, I am the goddess of beauty, a blooming flower

Breathing to name myself before the hues

Of purified aura slouched on the bliss of God.

And behold, the sky’s radiance, is the magic I breathe

to remain black, for I shine with the true colour

Of how God invented us to travel his words

Into the arms of men who forgot past their tongues

In the ancient shrines of broken titles.

Look unto me; I’m a portrait, of colours

that should have meant “gloom” but I choose beauty.

So, if you dare title me, remember to kneel before

The goddess of beauty, that embraces

Rhythms of every poem

Sketched on the heart of a stone-aged diary.
